If you have undergone the traumatic experience of having one or both or your breasts removed because of breast cancer, breast reconstruction can help you to regain a semblance of normalcy in your life. Working with a compassionate, skilled and highly trained plastic surgeon like Dr. Jeffrey Smith, can help you to more easily embrace the concept of breast reconstruction. Although breast reconstruction can rebuild your breast, the results are highly variable and it is a very good idea to do as much research and ask all the questions you can think of before you take the step of having one or both breasts reconstructed.
A reconstructed breast cannot have the same sensation and feel as the original breast. There may be visible incision lines whether from reconstruction or from the mastectomy itself. The tissue needed for the reconstruction is generally taken from a donor site such as the abdomen, buttocks or your back. As well, if only one breast is affected, it alone may be reconstructed which brings up the question of symmetry. In some cases, a breast reduction, breast lift or breast augmentation may be recommended for the unaffected breast in order to improve size and position (symmetry) of both breasts.
Dr. Jeffrey Smith has many years of experience in creating successful breast reconstructions. He also understands that it is a very emotionally trying time for his patients and it is his goal to make you feel as comfortable and cared for as is humanly possible.
